Research

Dr. Correia’s research program dates back to the mid-90s and encompasses four interrelated foci: online learning and teaching, collaborative learning, human-computer interaction, and curriculum development in educational technology.

Ana-Paula Correia Research

Dr. Correia’s four interrelated research foci.

These areas overlap significantly because they are connected to a central underlying theme in her research: learning design. Dr. Correia’s research takes place in formal and informal learning contexts, is aimed at different audiences (e.g., learners, teachers, and trainers), and uses a diverse set of strategies (e.g., in-class vs. online) and a plethora of existing and emerging technologies and tools. Her most recent research focuses on the role of Artificial Intelligence in education and training, with a particular emphasis on promoting AI literacy among learners and educators. She aims to equip educational communities with the skills and knowledge needed to engage with AI technologies safely and responsibly

Dr. Correia leads the Learning & Experience Design Research Group, a group dedicated to investigating learning design processes and pedagogies to create deep learning at The Ohio State University. This research group pursues four main research goals: (1) theory development/synthesis goals, (2) design/development goals, (3) action/evaluation goals, and (4) descriptive/interpretivist goals.

Dr. Correia has presented over 150 academic papers around the world and published over 100 refereed papers and book chapters in three different languages: English, Portuguese, and Spanish. She has numerous citations in Google Scholar. Dr. Correia's expertise as a social scientist and grant writer has been recognized by a number of agencies. As a result of her international reputation in educational technology, human-computer interaction, and e-learning, she has been invited to present findings from her research and discuss directions in the field at a number of international professional meetings and committees in Portugal, Denmark, Netherlands, Brazil, Turkey, Uganda, and China.
